Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
